According to the American Thyroid Association (ATA), more than 12 percent of the U.S. population, equivalent to one in ten individuals, will grapple with a thyroid condition during their lifetime. This probability skyrockets for women, with one in eight facing a disorder, especially following significant hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause. In light of these statistics, Wellcore’s resident hormone expert Ryan Lester, PA-C offers a comprehensive job description for the thyroid's pivotal role in our well-being.

Job Location & Role

The thyroid gland is a crucial component of the endocrine system, playing a key role in regulating various physiological functions in the body. Located in the neck, the thyroid produces hormones—primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)—that influence metabolism, growth, development, and body temperature.

The thyroid function is controlled by the pituitary gland through the secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which prompts the thyroid to release its hormones. Proper thyroid function is vital for the normal functioning of organs, tissues, and metabolic processes.

Job Performance Issues

Imbalances in thyroid hormone levels can lead to a range of health issues, including hypothyroidism (insufficient hormone production) or hyperthyroidism (excessive hormone production). Signs and symptoms of low thyroid function can be fatigue, constipation, cold hands/feet, intolerance to temperature fluctuations, brittle hair/nails, loss of outer third of the eyebrow, and brain fog. Thyroid disorders can affect various aspects of health, including energy levels, weight management, heart rate, and mental well-being.

Human Resources

Within the realm of health, the thyroid is a central player in keeping the body’s systems running smoothly. Routine monitoring and medical intervention are crucial to ensuring the thyroid functions optimally and to address any abnormalities that may arise. If you are concerned that you may be exhibiting signs of a thyroid disorder, be sure to seek the guidance of a healthcare practitioner. Staying informed and proactive is key—ensuring optimal thyroid function is fundamental for a balanced and healthy life.
